After several years of making art by sewing plastic bags onto a burlap backing, I began to work directly on the burlap, experimenting with line and texture through plain stitching, embroidery, and rug-making techniques. The burlap offers a rough, earthy field on which to explore. The background has become the foreground. I continue to attach various found objects, natural and manufactured, to satisfy my craving for the tactile. Seeing these familiar objects, repurposed and recontextualized, the viewer can reevaluate what they mean and how to relate to them. These works express my confrontation with the passage of time, the ephemeral nature of our existence, and the comfort and the tyranny of everyday tasks and rituals.
