Mola Paintings
One of my main influences in recent years has been the colorful fabric panels called Molas, stitched by the Kuna Indian women of the San Blas Islands, near Panama. The women use an intricate cutting and stitching technique to create abstract designs or images of what they see in everyday life (e.g., fish, boats, plants, airplanes). Each panel is packed to the corners with design motifs and images. I have borrowed these ideas to create painted Molas with images from my own everyday life.
